Why 3D Video Shorts are Taking Over Outdoor Social Media
Static screenshots of activity summaries only tell half the story. When you climb a 1,200m peak or traverse a technical alpine ridge, a flat 2D map doesn't convey the steepness, scale, or grandeur of the terrain.
3D camera flythroughs bring your outdoor achievements to life. With Trail Shorts, you can turn any GPX file into a high-definition 60 FPS video animation with terrain elevation, pacing statistics, and smooth camera tracking.
Step 1: Export Your GPX File
Almost every modern GPS watch, bike computer, or fitness application allows you to download your activity as a GPX file:
- Strava: Open your activity on the web, click the ••• button on the left, and choose Export GPX.
- Garmin Connect: Open your activity page, click the gear icon in the top right, and select Export to GPX.
- Coros: In the mobile app, tap your workout, tap the share icon in the top right, and choose Export Data > GPX.
- AllTrails & Komoot: Open any recorded trail or route and click Download GPX.
Step 2: Upload to Trail Shorts
Turn your GPX file into a 3D short
Render 3D GPS route flyovers and minimalist social stat cards in seconds — free and client-side.
Head over to Trail Shorts on your desktop or mobile browser.
Drag and drop your .gpx file into the upload dropzone, or tap Choose File.
Trail Shorts parses your elevation stream, GPS coordinates, timestamps, and heart rate data locally in your browser with zero server uploads for complete privacy.
Step 3: Customize Camera, Speed, and Aesthetics
Once your activity loads into the 3D studio, customize your short:
- Aspect Ratio: Select 9:16 Reel for Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube Shorts, or 1:1 Square for standard feed posts.
- Map Theme: Pick from High-Contrast Satellite, Outdoor Topo, Dark Neon, or Navigation styles.
- Metrics Overlay: Choose which live statistics to display along the route (Distance, Elapsed Time, Elevation Gain, Heart Rate).
- Animation Speed: Adjust the animation multiplier to fit your desired video duration (typically 8 to 20 seconds for optimal social retention).
Step 4: Record & Download
Click RECORD VIDEO. Trail Shorts captures the WebGL canvas in real-time at 60 FPS. Once rendering completes, your video is downloaded directly to your device ready to share!
